Khurja Madanpur Gang Rape

A 23-year-old woman from Khurja, a town in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, India, was allegedly gang-raped by two men in a hotel in Agra on Sunday night, January 9, 2023. The main accused, a block pramukh (village head) from Bah, a town in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Monday, January 10, 2023. The other two accomplices are still absconding.

The Incident

According to the complaint filed by the victim, she had received a call from an unknown number two months ago and the caller insisted on becoming her friend. He introduced himself as Lal Singh, a block pramukh from Bah, and assured her a job as an ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker. On this pretext, he called her to Agra on December 21, 2022 and took her to a farm house, where he along with his two friends, Jitemdra and Dev, allegedly gang-raped her. When the woman raised an alarm and said that she would file a police complaint against them, Singh threatened her of dire consequences. The woman alleged that they recorded a video of the assault and threatened to make it viral if she did not cooperate with them.

On Sunday, January 9, 2023, the main accused Lal Singh called her again to a hotel where he and Jitendra gang-raped her, she alleged. According to the CCTV footage of the hotel, the woman entered around 6 pm and left three hours later.

The Investigation

An FIR has been registered against the three accused under IPC sections 376 D (gang rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) at Tajganj police station on a complaint filed by the victim. Police said that according to call details, Singh had been in contact with the woman for the past few months. Further probe into the matter is on, said circle officer Sadar Rajeev Kumar.

The main accused Lal Singh was arrested on Monday, January 10, 2023 from his residence in Bah. He was produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody. The other two accused Jitendra and Dev are still on the run and police are conducting raids to nab them.

The Reaction

The incident has sparked outrage among the public and the media. Many people have condemned the heinous crime and demanded strict action against the culprits. Some activists have also staged protests outside the hotel and the police station demanding justice for the victim.

The victim's family has expressed their anguish and trauma over the incident. They have appealed to the authorities to ensure that the accused are punished severely and that no such incident happens again.
