Ip Man (2008) BRRip.XviD.AC3 ViSiON [Cantonese]

Ip Man is a 2008 biographical martial arts film based on the life of Ip Man, a grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun and teacher of Bruce Lee. The film focuses on events in Ip's life that supposedly took place in the city of Foshan during the Sino-Japanese War. The film was directed by Wilson Yip, and stars Donnie Yen as Ip Man, with martial arts choreography by Sammo Hung.

The film was released in Hong Kong on 18 December 2008, and received positive reviews from critics and audiences. It grossed over US$21 million worldwide, despite not being released in North America and most of Europe. Following its success, the film was nominated for 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, winning awards for Best Film and Best Action Choreography.

The film has spawned three sequels: Ip Man 2 (2010), Ip Man 3 (2015), and Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019), as well as several spin-offs and a television series. Plot

In the 1930s, Foshan is a hub of Southern Chinese martial arts, where various schools actively recruit disciples and compete against each other. Although the Wing Chun master Ip Man is the most skilled martial artist in Foshan, he is unassuming and keeps a low profile. As an aristocrat, he spends his time training at his mansion or taking care of his family.

One day, a young man named Lin challenges Ip to a fight, but is easily defeated. Lin's master, Liao, arrives to help him, but is also effortlessly subdued by Ip. The fight draws the attention of Jin Shanzhao, a ruthless and aggressive martial artist who also happens to be Lin's senior. Jin challenges Ip to a fight, but Ip declines. Jin then goes on a rampage with his gang, attacking other martial arts schools and taking their signs as trophies.

Ip's friend, Zhou Qingquan, who runs a cotton mill, asks Ip to help him guard his factory from Jin and his gang. Ip agrees, and encounters Jin at the factory. A fierce fight ensues, with Ip gaining the upper hand. However, before Ip can deliver a final blow, he is interrupted by the arrival of Japanese soldiers.

The Japanese occupation forces take over Foshan, leaving many people homeless and destitute. Ip and his family lose their wealth and are forced to move into a decrepit apartment. Zhou's factory is closed down and he becomes addicted to opium. Meanwhile, Miura, a Japanese general who is an avid karate enthusiast, sets up an arena where Chinese martial artists can compete with his soldiers for bags of rice. He also appoints Li Zhao, a translator and former police inspector who collaborates with the Japanese, to help him find worthy opponents.

One day, Li Zhao visits the apartment complex where Ip lives and invites the residents to join the arena. Several masters accept the offer, including Liao and Lin. However, they are brutally beaten and killed by Miura's protégé, Sato. When Zhou learns of their deaths from Li Zhao, he decides to take part in the arena as well. He asks Ip to accompany him for support.

At the arena, Zhou faces Miura himself and puts up a good fight until he is wounded by Miura's hidden blade. As Zhou lies dying on the floor, he begs Ip to take care of his son. Enraged by Zhou's death and Miura's treachery, Ip steps onto the platform and challenges Miura. He defeats Sato with one punch and then proceeds to take on ten karateka at once. He dispatches them with ease and then faces Miura in a one-on-one duel.

The fight attracts a large crowd of Chinese spectators who cheer for Ip. Using his superior speed and power, Ip overwhelms Miura with a barrage of punches that break his bones and damage his organs. Before Ip can finish him off, he is shot in the shoulder by Sato from behind. The crowd riots and attempts to storm the platform, but is held back by the Japanese soldiers. Ip is carried away by his friends, while Li Zhao secretly gives him an escape route. Jin, who has been working as a rickshaw driver, also helps Ip by fending off the soldiers with his spear skills.

Ip and his family leave Foshan with the help of Li Zhao and seek refuge in Hong Kong, where he sets up a Wing Chun school. The film ends with a scene of Ip teaching a young Bruce Lee.

Reception

The film received critical acclaim from both Chinese and Western critics. It holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 reviews, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The site's consensus reads: "At once beholden to the established conventions of the genre and delightfully subversive of them, Ip Man is one of the most exciting -- and refreshingly character-driven -- martial arts films in years." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 59 out of 100 based on 5 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

The film was praised for its realistic and authentic portrayal of Wing Chun, as well as its tribute to Ip Man's legacy. Donnie Yen's performance was widely lauded for his charisma and martial arts skills. The film was also commended for its cinematography, production design, music, and action choreography by Sammo Hung.

The film was also a commercial success, grossing over US$21 million worldwide. It was the fourth highest-grossing film in Hong Kong in 2008, behind Red Cliff Part II, CJ7, and Painted Skin. It also performed well in other Asian markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and mainland China.
